ProductPoll vs Pre-Order Apps: When to Use Each (Shopify)
Both methods help you avoid expensive inventory mistakes. The difference is what kind of “demand” they prove—preference vs payment.
If you’re validating a product on Shopify, you’ll see two popular approaches:
- Pre-order apps (money-first validation): shoppers commit by paying (or at least starting checkout).
- On-site polls (pre-validation): shoppers choose between options when they’re browsing.
They’re not enemies. For physical products, the best workflow is usually poll first (pick the winner), then pre-order (confirm pricing + wallet demand).
What each method proves
- ProductPoll proves preference. “If shoppers see A and B, which do they actually pick?”
- Pre-orders prove payment intent. “Will shoppers pay for the final version at this price?”
When ProductPoll is the better first step
- You’re choosing between variants (colorways, designs, bundles, packaging).
- You haven’t finalized cost or lead time yet (supplier quotes still in progress).
- You want a fast signal with low friction (click to vote vs checkout).
- You want to involve customers in the decision (“help us pick the next drop”).
When a pre-order app is the better first step
- You already have a single, finalized product (not a “which one?” decision).
- You have a credible delivery window and supplier capacity.
- You need to validate price elasticity (will $49 work, or only $29?).
- You’re planning a crowdfunding-style launch where money is the KPI.
A practical hybrid workflow
- Poll between 2–4 concepts to choose the winner.
- Waitlist the winner (email capture) to measure intent and build a launch list.
- Pre-order the final version to validate wallet demand and fund production.
- Stock smarter: manufacture the winner first, keep runner-ups for future tests.
Common mistake: launching pre-orders for multiple variants at once. You’ll split demand and learn less. A poll helps you collapse the decision into a single “best bet” first.
